The metal casting production method was grouped with 273 codes in the International Standard for Industrial Classification ISIC Rev.3 and Rev 3.1. With the amendment made in 2008, ISIC Rev.4 was published and the metal casting industry code was determined as 243. Code 2431 covers iron and steel casting and Code 2432 covers casting of non-ferrous metals.

It is possible to summarize the production methods used in the casting industry as metal melting, sand preparation, core production, molding, cleaning, heat treatment, grinding and coating processes.

Casting production method is one of the basic elements of industrial production and organizations that produce with this technique are divided into two. For example, a facility that manufactures and sells cast iron bathtubs may direct its production line to stove and fireplace parts casting as this market shrinks, and if this market shrinks, it may turn to automotive parts casting.
